I had the rude shock the other morning of looking in the mirror and realizing just how much I look like my father. Oof! Definitely wasn’t prepared for that kicking off my day.

Not that I didn’t already know this. To look at me is to look at my dad and my grandfather both. To the extent that numerous people, both family and people meeting him for the first time, have commented on the similarity. Clearly the genes on that side of the family have been beating up the others and taking their lunch money. Still, it was a bit much that early.

Except maybe it doesn’t have to be that way. If they can create backlit mirrors, mirrors that don’t fog, and mirrors with built-in televisions, could we get someone to design one that makes us look better first thing in the morning? Maybe something that takes the edge off the initial shock?

I realize I’m never going to bound out of bed looking my best. I don’t know that anyone does. But I do wonder from time to time just what was happening in my sleep to get my hair looking that way. I don’t remember using the hand mixer in my sleep. Not to mention the pillow creases adding to whatever wrinkles are slowly sinking in.

And it doesn’t have to be super complicated. I’m thinking something along the lines of Snapchat filters or lenses. Something that comes on when you step in front of the mirror. I think I’d feel better with some bunny ears and a nose. Or maybe a nice filter to smooth me out that eventually fades so I can ease my way into those early hours.

But I guess that would just be one more product for Apple to sell us. The new iMirror, complete with filters, e-mail, iTunes, etc. Just as long as I don’t have to remember my passcode first thing. Or would facial recognition still work when I look that bad?

We could also go the way of having the mirror tell you exactly what’s what. Sort of the converse of the magic mirror in Snow White. Except I don’t know that me or any of my friends are prepared to flip on the bathroom light and hear: “Gurl, you look rough. What exactly did you do last night?”

I suspect there would be a lot of evil queens. And quite a few broken mirrors.
